Sliding and folding glass doors in Houston.

Houston is the replacement market. Most of what we take out here is a 1970s or 80s aluminum patio slider that has swollen, pitted or stopped rolling — and most of it comes out and goes back in the same opening, without structural work.

Working in Houston

What the work looks like here.

The Gulf coast is hard on glazing. Salt-laden humid air, ninety-degree dew points for months at a time, and cooling loads that run most of the year. Older aluminum sliders here fail in a predictable order: the rollers go first under the weight, then the weatherseal hardens and lets conditioned air out, then the untreated frame pits at the sill where water sits. By the time a door is dragging, the thermal loss has usually been going on for years.

That is why almost all of our Houston work is replacement rather than new build. A slim-frame COR Vision slider drops into an existing patio opening in most cases — we survey the structural opening, confirm we can hold the head height, and fit the new system without touching the lintel. Where the opening is being widened as part of a renovation, we work to the structural engineer's drawings.

Houston homes also tend to have the depth of lot that suits a wide opening. A single run can reach roughly 43 feet across six panels and turn a 90° corner without a structural mullion, which is what makes a bayou-side or pool-terrace elevation work as one continuous plane of glass rather than a series of punched openings.

What actually drives the spec here

Solar gain, not heat loss.

Specifying big glass in Houston is a solar-heat-gain problem before it is an insulation problem. Under the 2021 IECC, which the city adopted in January 2024, vertical glazing is capped at a maximum U-factor of 0.40 and a maximum SHGC of 0.25. A thermally broken aluminum system clears 0.40 comfortably; the 0.25 is the number that actually decides the build-up, and it means a solar-control low-E coating is not optional. We size the glazing to the orientation of the opening rather than quoting one make-up for the whole house.

Systems

Two systems, both installed by us.

We make sliding and folding systems and nothing else. Which one suits your opening depends on whether you want to frame a view or clear the whole wall.

Questions

Glass doors in Houston, answered.

The things people ask before they book. Still unsure? Send the opening and we will give you a straight answer.

Do you replace existing patio sliding doors in Houston?

Yes — it is the bulk of our Houston work. We take out an older aluminum or vinyl patio door and fit a slim-frame system into the same structural opening, in most cases without altering the lintel or the header. We survey first and confirm in writing what can be held and what cannot before anything is ordered.

Will a wide glass wall meet Houston energy code?

Yes, but the constraint is usually solar heat gain rather than insulation. We specify the glazing make-up to the orientation of the opening — a west-facing elevation needs a different coating from a shaded north one. We confirm the performance figures for your specific configuration before you commit.

Do I need impact-rated glass in Houston?

It depends on your address, and Houston is unusual in making that explicit. The city adopted the 2021 codes without amending the opening-protection rules, so the windborne debris region applies as written — broadly, where the design wind speed reaches 140 mph. That covers the south-east of the city, around Clear Lake, Hobby and out toward Pasadena and Seabrook, while downtown and north Houston sit below the threshold at roughly 136 mph and do not trigger it. Houston requires the design wind speed for the specific property to be looked up and attached to the plans, so we establish it at survey rather than guessing.

Do I need TDI windstorm certification?

Almost certainly not, and this is the single most misreported point in our industry. TDI's catastrophe area is the fourteen coastal counties — Harris is not one of them. The only Harris County exception is property east of State Highway 146 within La Porte, Morgan's Point, Pasadena, Seabrook or Shoreacres. A project in River Oaks, Memorial, the Heights or Katy needs no WPI-8 inspection. Note it is a different boundary from the windborne debris region above, so a home can fall inside one and outside the other.

How do these doors handle Gulf coast humidity?

The frames are thermally broken aluminum with a polyamide barrier, powder-coated or anodized, and gasketted on all four edges. Drainage is designed into the sill so standing water clears rather than sitting against the frame — which is what kills the older sliders we take out, where water sat at the sill until the untreated frame pitted.

Do you subcontract installation in Houston?

No. The same team that fabricates and glazes the panels installs and calibrates them on site. There is no dealer between you and us, which means one number to call when something needs adjusting.
